EFFECT ON SHRINKAGE

Plastic shrinkage cracks are unsightly cracks that appear in the surface of the concrete within the first few hours after placement. Although they are not a structural issue initally, the cracks do result in lower surface durability and eventually lead to structural integrity. The cracks appear because the rate of evaporation at the surface exceeds the amount of bleed water available. During this stage, the concrete has attained some rigidity, but has not developed enough tensile strength to withstand the rapid volume change that results from the evaporation.

There are four main factors that affect the evaporation rate at the surface of concrete. The higher the evaporation rate, the higher potential exists for shrinkage cracking. There are varying opinions on acceptable level of evaporation rates. However, general guidelines indicate that if evaporation rates exceed 0.2 lbs/ft2/hr, plastic shrinkage is likely to occur.

Intuitively, one would think that evaporation rates are highest during the hot summer months, however, there is also a high potential for evaporation rates when the air temperature drops, but concrete temperatures remain high. Outside of delaying concrete pours or re-scheduling crews, there are limited practical methods for controlling the evaporation rate.
