Doubletime in Atlanta: Faster Concrete Production results in Reduced Pour Time

Mid-summer 2020, a project constructing a new cancer treatment wing required a 500 CY pour for a mass concrete footing. NITROcrete doubled the production rate of a previous pour that used ice for concrete cooling. What took 10 hours before, took 5 hours and resulted in a more consistent mixture.

Faster pour times and the more consistent mix led to significant cost-savings for both the Ready Mix Producer and the Contractor.

Project

  • 70° F / 21° C
  • 460 cubic yard pour
  • Cancer Research Center
  • Customer: International Ready Mix Producer

Challenge

  • Largest mass pour using NITROcrete LN application in Atlanta, to-date
  • Mass concrete required 20 degrees of reliable cooling
  • High ambient temperatures during Atlanta summertime

NITROCRETE™ ADVANTAGES

Because they partnered with NITROcrete, the local Ready Mix Producer cooled concrete without changing the water-to-cement ratio. They delivered 50 consistent, acceptable loads of concrete in half the time. This efficiency enabled the concrete plant to continue batching concrete all afternoon for other clients.

By eliminating ice, they also eliminated the headaches that accompany ice-usage like ice delivery and storage, labor to load ice (and the resulting injuries that often accompany this process).

All this means that the Project Owner gained peace of mind from a higher quality product created with a safer overall process.

About NITROcrete™

NITROcrete is the world leader in concrete temperature control. In 2012, what started as a jobsite problem for a partner evolved into a solution that is revolutionizing the concrete industry. The team listened, tested, developed prototypes, and made adjustments. Then they listened more, tested more, and in 2017, after 5 years of R&D, they introduced NITROcrete, a comprehensive concrete solution born directly out of the concrete industry.

The largest concrete companies in the world now use NITROcrete to simplify their processes, streamline their operations, and grow their bottom lines. NITROcrete provides a comprehensive concrete solution–cooling, system management, and support–which gives its worldwide industry partners unmatched efficiency, control, and peace of mind.

Advantages

  • 50 consistent loads in half the time
  • 20°F of reliable cooling delivered throughout the pour
  • Broke market records for NITROcrete LN in the region
  • Improved slump and air content while preserving water content ratios

Workability, Evaporation, and Concrete Temperature | NITROcrete

Hot weather concreting isn't for the faint of heart. We'd hazard a hypothesis that profanity on project sites goes up proportionally with ambient temperature. In short: hot weather concrete is difficult. A simple-sounding yet familiar problem, but one with a complicated explanation. Stubborn hot weather concrete causes challenges for a variety of interconnected reasons.

ADOT changes specification to include liquid nitrogen

“We often receive questions about the effects of liquid nitrogen on aggregates,” said Eric Van Dixhorn, NITROcrete VP of Engineering. “Arizona was invested in confirming the safety of pre-cooling methods of delivering liquid nitrogen to the aggregate — which differs from what people historically think of when they imagine LN for concrete cooling...

Reduce Carbon Emissions and Waste

A third-party Streamlined Comparative Life Cycle Assesment compared liquid nitrogen cooling with ice cooling; the results showed significant reduction in carbon emissions, harmful particulate matter, and energy consumption.
