I-74 Mississippi Bridge

With an estimated rise in traffic to 99,900 vehicles per day by the year 2035, the Iowa and Illinois DOTs determined an expansion is needed to replace the original 1935 and 1960 I-74 bridges over the Mississippi. This “Bridge for the Future” will expand to include three lanes in each direction with select locations featuring multi-use paths and additional lanes.

CHALLENGE

Due to the size and geometryof the bridge piers and footings, the concrete temperature specs were extremely strict and unattainable without liquid nitrogen. An alternate, unreliable liquid nitrogen solution was used during the first year of production costing Hahn Ready Mix, and the entire project, significant time and financial losses. Hahn needed a solution that provided consistently low temperatures with a reliable nitrogen supply and dependable customer support.

SOLUTION

NITROcrete enabled concrete temperatures to remain consistent throughout rising ambient temperatures and slow barge transportation.
